CAIRO – 6 March 2024: The Egyptian government announced Tuesday it would import one million tons of sugar in 2024 and that would be mostly offered in subsidized prices in order to make up for the shortage the local market is enduring.

The General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) took in December steps to import 50,000 tons of raw sugar, and that were scheduled for delivery in February 2024.

In an effort to alleviate the burden of soaring local sugar prices, the Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade had also announced adding one more kilogram of sugar per individual on family ration cards with a maximum of three persons.

Moreover, households having four or more individuals would receive an extra two kilograms of sugar on their ration cards.
