CAIRO - 22 July 2017: Cairo Criminal Court ruled a final death sentence Saturday to 28 defendants accused of involvement in the assassination of former Attorney General Hisham Barakat.
The court also ruled to sentence 15 defendants in the same case to life, eight others to 15 years in prison and 15 to 10 years.
On July 17, 31 defendants were sentenced to death, and their case to the Grand Mufti for a religious opinion.
After the Mufti provides his unbinding opinion to the court, it either confirms or commutes the sentence, after which defendants may appeal the sentence legally.
The defendants are facing other charges, most notably association with Palestinian militant group Hamas and aiming to foment instability in the country, as well as illegal possession of firearms.
Barakat was assassinated on June 29, 2015 when a car bomb detonating in his car outside his home in Cairo’s Heliopolis neighborhood.
