CAIRO – 24 February 2024: Egypt is establishing a second camp in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, to accommodate around 4,000 displaced Palestinians amidst the dire humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged strip.

The camp is being set up in coordination between the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the week.

It will consist of 400 tents equipped with power and W.Cs.

Additionally, Egypt will establish a field hospital and two relief aid distribution centers in Rafah city, along with another camp for displaced Palestinians in the central Gaza city of Deir Al Balah.

Collapsing humanitarian situation

The new camp is being set up in response to the collapsing humanitarian situation in Gaza, in light of Israeli strikes, hindered aid delivery efforts, and the non-functioning of health facilities.

The Nasser Medical Complex, Gaza's largest medical facility, has been rendered inoperable due to the Israeli siege.

The population in Gaza is suffering from severe food shortages, as Israeli authorities impose heavy restrictions on aid delivery, including prolonged inspection procedures.

Israeli forces have denied over 50% of aid delivery and assessment missions to areas in desperate need, such as north of Wadi Gaza, according to the UN.

According to Save the Children, 1.1 million children, comprising half of Gaza's population, are facing starvation.

Ceasing hostilities

Meanwhile, Egypt has warned against Israeli plans to launch a military operation in Rafah, a refuge for over 1 million Palestinians displaced by the war, as well as its 200,000 resident population.

Egypt emphasizes the catastrophic consequences such an operation would entail.

Egypt, along with the US, Israel, and Qatar, is engaged in negotiations to end the nearly five-month-long war in Gaza, aiming to facilitate the exchange of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli captives held by Hamas in the strip.
