CAIRO – 16 February 2024: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry lauded considerable efforts made by The Elders with international parties to stop bloodshed in the Gaza Strip and contain the worsening humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave.
Shoukry's remarks came during his meeting on Friday with a number of prominent former world leaders who are members of The Elders group, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference held from 16 -18 February, said Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The spokesman added that the foreign minister briefed the group's members on Egypt's moves at the political and diplomatic levels to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and release hostages, as well as ensure delivery of sufficient and sustainable relief aid to the enclave's residents.
Shoukry warned of the serious humanitarian repercussions of any Israeli military operations in Rafah city, the spokesman said.
In this regard, the top Egyptian diplomat called on international actors to press Israel for ceasing its planned military operations in Rafah, allowing full access for aid to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of Gaza's residents and preventing its forced displacement scenario, he added.
Talks between Shoukry and the group's members tackled the ongoing endeavors to fully implement the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly on Gaza, as well as provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice, according to the spokesman.
The Elders members expressed appreciation of Egypt's strenuous efforts to contain the crisis' fallout and its key role in providing humanitarian aid, he said.
They stressed keenness on continuing consultations with Egypt and international parties to handle the crisis and advance peace efforts, with the aim of preserving regional stability and international peace and security, added the spokesman
