CAIRO – 16 January 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry received Tuesday UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag who has recently held the position in the aftermath of the issuance of the UNSC resolution no. 2720 a few weeks ago.
The minister and the UN official conferred over the assessment of the humanitarian status in the Strip so as Kaag gave an overview of her priorities and vision on ways to carry out tasks.
There was congruence on the salience of increasing the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and supporting the operation of various facilities, hospitals, and rescue agencies.
On his side, Minister Shokry affirmed Egypt's readiness to facilitate speeding up the delivery of shipments, underscoring that Israel must commit to not obstructing the delivery of shipments as well as the mission of the UN senior coordinator.
The minister noted that the issuance of the UNSC resolution no. 2720 reflects the international community's realization of the challenges and obstacles facing the entry of aid. In that context, he pointed out Egypt's commitment, since the beginning of the crisis, to achieve the sustainability of aid delivery in spite of the impediments set by the Israeli side.
The UN official expressed appreciation for the role assumed by Egypt and keenness on maintaining coordination and consultation with the country. Kaag will hold Wednesday a visit to Arish International Airport and Rafah Border Crossing.
