CAIRO- 9 December 2023- Al-Azhar welcomes the Danish Parliament’s issuance of a law criminalizing the burning of the Holy Qur’an
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Egypt’s top Sunni Islamic institute, welcomed the Danish Parliament’s approval of a law criminalizing the burning of the Holy Qur’an.
Al Azhar said that this is a commendable and appreciated step that helps put an end to attempts to infringe upon and attack the sanctities of Muslims and consolidates positive citizenship, societal peace, and world peace.
Al-Azhar also confirmed that this step comes in the right direction to reduce the intensity of anti-Muslim hate speech.
The Islamic institute also called upon other European countries that have witnessed similar incidents to enact such legislation that prohibits insulting religions and religious sanctities, and in a way that ensures societal security and peace.
On July 27, Egypt summoned the Danish ambassador in Cairo in protest against recurrent acts of Quran burning.
Upon directives of Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for North and Central Europe Yasser Hashem summoned the Danish ambassador in Cairo to inform her of Egypt's condemnation of the recurrent acts of burning copies of the holy Quran in front of headquarters of foreign missions in Denmark, the latest of which took place in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Copenhagen on July 25, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.
