CAIRO – 10 November 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received on Friday Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani at Cairo International Airport.
The two leaders will hold a summit in the Egyptian capital today, Egypt’s Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said in a statement.
President Sisi and Sheikh Tamim will reportedly discuss the crisis of captives being held by Hamas amid the ongoing Israeli war in the Gaza Strip, which started on 7 October.
The summit comes a day after a Hamas delegation led by senior Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Meshaal met Head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service (GIS) Abbas Kamel, where they reportedly discussed the issue of the captives as well as a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
Egypt and Qatar have been working to pave the way for a deal that includes implementing humanitarian truce in Gaza and exchanging captives.
An Egyptian-Qatari mediation late in October resulted in the release of two Israeli captives Nurit Yitzhak and Yocheved Lifshitz for humanitarian and health reasons.
On 7 October, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing hundreds of Israelis and taking around 240 captives.
The Israeli retaliatory war has killed around 11,000 Palestinians and injured more than 26,000 others, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry on Thursday.
