CAIRO – 8 November 2023: UN High Commissioner for Human Right Volker Türk thanked on Wednesday the Egyptian government for its pivotal role in delivering humanitarian assistance to the war-battered Gaza Strip.
In a brief word following his return from Rafah, he said he visited Rafah border terminal which is considered a lifeline to almost 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza but it became unfortunately a weak lifeline.
He said there is a severe humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza where people are being subjected to continued Israeli bombing and are struggling to get their basic needs of water, electricity, food and fuel.
Even before October 7 attack, Gazans were living under a suffocating siege and Gaza was described as an open prison under the yoke of the Israeli occupation, he added.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk underlined the importance of ending violence in the Gaza Strip.
In press remarkets after a meeting with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit, Türk said his visit to Egypt comes after a month of the war in Gaza, noting that he will visit Rafah crossing to stand on assistance access to the enclave.
The UN official said he will visit Jordan on Thursday to boost humanitarian efforts over the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Arab League Assistant Secretary General Haifa Abu Ghazaleh said Abul Gheit underlined the stands of Egypt and Jordan rejecting forced displacement of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
The talks also tackled the role of the UN Human Rights Commission to protect the Palestinians as well as preparations for the Global Refugee Forum 2023, slated for December, she said.
