CAIRO – 6 November 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir agreed on Monday to intensify efforts and communications between each other and with the Sudanese parties in order to reach urgent solutions to the Sudan crisis.
After meeting with the South Sudanese president in Cairo, Sisi said in a press conference with Kiir that they agreed on urging the various Sudanese parties to prioritize supreme national interests of Sudan over personal interests.
Sisi added that such personal interests and foreign interference would deepen and extend the crisis and increase the suffering of the Sudanese people.
“We have affirmed that Egypt and South Sudan have a pivotal role in the Sudanese crisis with the necessity of not ignoring any initiatives or endeavors made to settle the crisis,” Sisi said durig the presser.
He added that Egypt and South Sudan have a greater understanding of the nature of the crisis and its tribal entanglements more than any other country.
“We also emphasized the centrality of the path of neighboring countries and the results of its meetings in settling the crisis,” Sisi added.
Egypt-South Sudan relations
Sisi said his discussions with Kiir today were deep and fruitful, reflecting the two countries’ political will toward enhancing their integrated strategic partnership in various fields.
“Despite the international economic challenges, Egypt will spare no effort to stand by the Republic of South Sudan especially in the field of capacity building and in providing technical expertise in various fields,” Sisi stated.
The Egyptian president stressed his country’s full support for the efforts of Kiir and all South Sudanese parties to achieve peace in the country.
“In this regard, I would like to praise the efforts made by the political parties in South Sudan to move forward with the implementation of the electoral entitlement,” Sisi said.
Sisi said they also discussed ways to enhance and develop joint political, military and security coordination during the current regional situation.
“We agreed to coordinate our efforts in a way that achieves security and stability in the region and preserves the interests of our peoples,” the Egyptian president added.
Sisi said he also reviewed with Kiir the ongoing negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) file with the aim of reaching a legally-binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam.
