CAIRO – 25 October 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a summit in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip.

During their meeting, the two leaders will discuss efforts to de-escalate the situation in Gaza after nearly three weeks of Israeli strikes against the strip in retaliation for an attack by Hamas on 7 October.

The Israeli strikes have killed more than 6,500 Palestinians, injured more than 18,000 and displaced around 1.5 million Palestinians out of the 2.3 million population in Gaza.

Macron’s visit to Egypt comes as part of his Middle East tour to discuss the situation in Gaza and Israel, where he visited Jerusalem, Ramallah and Jordan and met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II.

In the Jordan meeting today, King Abdullah called for Macron to help urge Israel to stop the war in Gaza as a matter of urgent necessity.

On Saturday, Egypt hosted the Cairo Summit for Peace with the participation of around 31 countries, including Arab and European countries, urging the need for immediate de-escalation and for the return to the negotiation table to achieve peace.

However, the summit did not issue a final communique due to differences between the Arab and European delegations over the “level of condemnation” of one of the parties of the conflict, according to the presidential spokesman later on Saturday.

While the Arab delegations called for immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the European leaders have advocated the Israeli right to “self-defense” and called for a clearer condemnation of the Hamas movement.
