CAIRO – 5 October 2023: Thunderstorms hit many areas across Matrouh governorates in northwestern Egypt through night, triggering torrents and forming water pools in low-lying areas.
The rain flooded some areas, especially on the outskirts of Marsa Matrouh city.
The governorate’s operations rooms deployed equipment to deal with water pools after receiving complaints from citizens.
People of Matrouh, especially those living in desert areas, wait for heavy rains every year to fill wells and rainwater tanks. Inhabitants depend on this water throughout the year for drinking, agriculture, and animal husbandry.
They also prepare for the rainy season by plowing the lands and scattering barley and wheat seeds.
As Egypt welcomes fall, light to moderate rain is expected in the northern coast, Lower Egypt and Greater Cairo on Thursday.
Also, the northwestern coast and northern Lower Egypt may also experience light rain on Friday, the Egyptian Meteoroligical Authority (EMA) said.
Weather will be warm in Greater Cairo, Lower Egypt, the northeastern coast and northern Upper Egypt this week.
Moderate weather will prevail in the northwestern coast, while South Sinai will experience hot weather and southern Upper Egypt will continue to suffer from extreme heat.
Average temperatures based on the EMA expectations until next Monday:
- Cairo and Lower Egypt – Highs: 30 – lows: 23
- Northern coasts – Highs: 28 – lows: 22
- South Sinai – Highs: 36 – lows: 26
