CAIRO – 2 October 2023: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi praised members of the Ministry of Interior and the Armed Forces, who sacrificed themselves to face terrorist challenges.

The President commented on the Minister of Interior’s presentation at the “Story of A Homeland” Conference, saying that the state’s institutions were targeted following the 2011 events, noting that development is part of human life.

A total of 1,194 police personnel were killed and 22,000 others were injured during anti-terrorism campaigns, said Egyptian Minister of Interior Mohamed Tawfiq at the conference.

The police headquarters and facilities were massively affected after the 2011 Revolution, and the banned group of the Muslim Brotherhood was the mastermind behind terrorist attacks, the Minister of Interior added.

Egypt was attacked by 260 terrorist acts in the period between 2013 and 2014, and the crime rate in Egypt increased by 240% in 2014, Tawfiq continued.

He added that Muslim Brotherhood members, who are living abroad still remain a threat against Egypt, noting that the banned group was the main cause of violence and had connections with other terrorist groups.

Egypt had to get rid of terrorism and crimes, in parallel with development, while a total of 1,203 terrorist hotspots have been dismantled in Egypt, the Minister said.

“Over the past nine years, terrorism in Sinai was eliminated, in cooperation with the Armed Force,” the Minister of Interior said.

The Minister stated that the Ministry of Interior confiscated 22.5 billion EGP of money laundering crimes and arrested 98.4% of fugitives, who escaped during the 2011 prison breaks.

The three-day conference, which kicked off on Saturday, comprises a number of round circles and plenary sessions to thoroughly discuss the achievements and projects implemented over the past 9 years, as well as the challenges facing the country.
