Egypt’s new prosecutor-general orders continuing inspection visits to correctional centers

CAIRO – 28 September 2023: Egypt’s new Prosecutor-General Mohamed Shawki ordered continuing the Public Prosecution’s periodic and surprise inspection visits to correctional centers to check on the implementation of law.

In this regard, the prosecutor-general ordered continuing the activation of the prosecution’s authorities with regard to inspecting correctional centers and police stations, a statement by the prosecution said on Wednesday.

This comes within the framework of applying the sovereignty of law and protecting rights and freedoms guaranteed by the constitution to citizens, the statement added.

A team from the Public Prosecution made a surprise inspection visit to the Correctional and Rehabilitation Complex in Wadi El Natroun to check on the situation of the inmates.

The prosecution team checked on the suitability of the detention facilities, exercise places, and the hospital that belongs to the complex.

The prosecution members also met with a number of inmates and verified the safety of their living conditions and made sure that food preparation areas comply with health specifications and requirements.

Members of the Public Prosecution also verified that patients receive medical treatment on a regular basis and that the complex adheres to the laws and regulations.
