145 Egyptian bodies arrive to Tobruk morgue to be to be sent to Egypt

CAIRO – 12 September 2023: The Tobruk Coastal Security Administration announced, Tuesday, the arrival of 145 Egyptian bodies to the Tobruk morgue, to be sent to Egypt.

The Egyptian victims are among thousands whom been killed and injured due to Mediterranean “Storm Daniel” that hit Libya during the past days.  

On its official page Facebook, Tobruk Coastal Security Administration confirmed that all Egyptian victims were deported to Egypt.

Egyptian Chief of Staff Osama Askar arrived in Libya Tuesday, accompanied by 25 rescue teams as well as three military jets carrying food and medical supply, to express solidarity with the storm-hit country, meeting with Commander-in-chief of the National Libyan Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi had met earlier on Tuesday with a number of commanders of the Egyptian Armed Forces, instructing the delivery of humanitarian aid, rescue teams and equipment, as well as camping gear to Libya and Morocco by both air and sea.

The death toll from stunning flood impacts brought by a fierce Mediterranean storm striking Libya has now reached more than 5,200, according to Essam Abu Zariba, the interior minister of the country’s eastern government.

The update, reported by the Libya Observer on Tuesday, also said thousands remain missing, with images from the hard-hit coastal city of Derna showing bodies piled up in the streets and as much as 25% of the city washed away.

Humanitarian aid is on the way, according to the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity. A flight loaded with 14 tons of supplies, including medical equipment and body bags, was sent to Benghazi this morning.
