CAIRO – 8 September 2023: Ahead of the 50th anniversary for October’s war victory [1973], Israel still struggling desperately to repeat and prove an alleged-story regarding one of greatest spies in the 20th centuries, known code-named “the Angel,” Ashraf Marwan.
Israeli newspapers and media re-published reports and photos released by the Mossad in which they are calming that it is a photo of one of its handlers with Marwan who warned the agency that war was about to break out.
The Israeli-alleged-story led to a state of discord arose between the Israeli intelligence [Mossad] and the army leaders, who ignored the warnings regarding the ‘Yom Kippur War’.
He listed in his book, proven facts that Ashraf Marwan deceived Israel’s Mossad, and that he was working for the Egyptian intelligence, with the aim of misleading Israel.
Not just bergman, was the only Israeli historian who was convinced that Marwan was working for Egypt, but also Col. (Ret) Shimon Mendes, who served in the IDF intelligence directorate during the October War.
During participating in a lecture regarding Marwan’s role in Israel, he said: “Ashraf Marwan has betrayed our leaders, and everything that is said about him by the Israeli side is worthless.”
He confirmed that “All that is kept in Israel about Ashraf Marwan, of photos and evidence, has no real no value.”
He added, "Everyone in Israel believes that Ashraf Marawan provided us with information, and that the Israelis thought Marawan did not know that we were reading information from more than one source."
“Late President Anwar Sadat did not build an intelligence agency to serve as a 'decoration', in fact he worked hard on two main axes, the first strategic and the second tactical.” Mendes said
In another published book for Mendes, released in 2018 and titled ‘Sadat's Jihad’, he wondered: “If Israel had really such a powerful agent who told them the exact date of the war, why have they lost it?”
In the Mossad-released publications, it’s stated that ‘the Angel’ told Mossad leaders that the war will start at the evening; however later on he corrected the information to 3PM.
Neither of the information, however was right, as the war began at 2 p.m. the following day Israel received its warning. Mendes
In his book, also, Mendes described late president Sadat, as a “Muslim Pharaoh,” who deceived everyone, because Israeli intelligence thought it knew all about the personality of Anwar Sadat.
But in fact, Mendes stated that Sadat surprised the world reveling his true personality, nature and strategy.
“Sadat had proven in the 1973 war that he was a personality with an intellectual mind. Political and military strategy.
‘Justifying failure’
Former Director of the Morale Affairs Department in the Egyptian Army, Major General Samir Farag, said That Israel’s “narrative about Ashraf Marwan is just an attempt to justify their failure. They repeat this Ahead of the war anniversary annually.”
“Israel allegations that Marwan worked with them are complete lies”, Farag said, adding that, “Ashraf Marwan was a great man, he deceived the Israelis, and he was officially honored in Egypt. Mossad is promoting this to the Israeli people to justify their failure.”
Marwan was an Egyptian billionaire who was born on February 2, 1944 in Cairo to a respected family. His grandfather was the head of the Sharia courts in Egypt. Marwan, who was the husband of Mona Abdel Nasser, the daughter of former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
In 1969, Marwan started his career as an employee in the presidential office during Abdel Nasser’s era. Then, he became the secretary of information to Sadat. After the 1973 war, Marwan became the president secretary for foreign relations.
In 1981, Marwan left Egypt and started his career as a businessman in London.
In 2002, Israel started its alleged campaign that Marwan spied for it under the code name “The Angel”, revealing to them a lot of precious secrets, which were easy for a person in Marwan’s position to know. The most confidential was the news of October 1973, as he warned the Israeli intelligence on October 5, 1973 that the war would start the next day.
‘Israel killed Marwan’
On June 27, 2007, Marwan was found dead, laying on the ground beside his residence in Carlton House Terrace in London. It was said that someone pushed him from his apartment balcony, but nobody knows who was behind his death
“Marwan was an Egyptian hero. He was not a spy for Israel as was claimed to be, and Israel was the one who killed him” Gamal Sadat, son of Egypt's late president, Anwar Sadat said in televised statements last October.
He explained, “they did it because he gave them wrong war timing. They need time to call up Military reserve force, and his information didn’t allow them to do so.”
“I knew him personally; he was so smart.” Gamal said. He added, “Just think about it, the husband of late president Naser daughter, and then, he working with late president Sadat, if he was really as they claimed, they would’ve known about it.”
“Israel never forgets, they did it. They killed Marwan, because he was their biggest defeat” Sadat said.
Mubarak: Marwan was a loyal patriot man
In 2007, late president Hosny Mubarak told reporters that “Ashraf Marwan was a loyal patriot man to his country, and carried out patriotic actions that the time had not yet come to reveal, but he was indeed an Egyptian patriot. He was not a spy at all.”
As he was talking with editors and reporters his return trip from Accra, after his participation in the ninth African summit in Ghana, he confirmed that what was published about Marwan and his cooperation with Israel and telling them the date 1973 war is ‘baseless.’
Late President Mubarak added that the ‘element of surprise’ in October War was one of the important elements in achieving victory, and that Israel admitted that it has been deceived and was unable to know the exact timing of the war.
“I have no doubt at all about the patriotism of Ashraf Marwan, I knew all the details of what he was doing to serve his country” Mubarak said.
In October War which is also known as Yom Kippur War, and the 1973 Arab–Israeli war, Egypt succeeded to free it’s occupied land which were occupied by Israel in 1967. The majority of combat between the two sides took place in the Sinai and the Golan Heights—both of. Several Arab countries supported Egypt with different ways during the war.
