Egypt hands over presidency of Arab League Council at delegates level to Morocco

CAIRO - 4 September 2023: Egypt on Monday handed over the presidency of the Arab League Council at the permanent delegates level to Morocco.

Addressing the Arab League Council session, kicked off earlier in the day at the Arab League premises, Egypt's Permanent Delegate to the Arab League Ambassador Mohamed Mostafa Orfi announced the conclusion of the 159th Session of the Arab League Council and handed over the presidency of the new session to Morocco's Permanent Delegate Ambassador Ahmed Tazi.

Ambassador Orfi wished success to Morocco in chairing the meetings of the 160th Session of the Arab League Council at the permanent delegates' level.

Egypt has transferred the presidency of the Arab League Council at the delegate's level to Morocco. This is in line with the customary rotation of the leadership among member states of the Arab League.

The Arab League, formally known as the League of Arab States, is a regional organization founded in 1945, comprising 22 Arab countries in and around North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. Its main aim is to foster economic growth, resolve disputes among its members, and coordinate political aims.

The Arab League Council is the primary decision-making body of the organization. The presidency of the Arab League Council rotates among member states and occurs at various levels: heads of state, foreign ministers, and delegates. Each term of the presidency lasts for six months.

Egypt, as one of the founding members of the Arab League and the country where the league's headquarters is located (in Cairo), has always played a pivotal role in the organization. Its transfer of the presidency symbolizes its continued commitment to the principles of joint Arab action and cooperation.

Morocco, on the other hand, has been a member since its independence in 1956. Over the years, it has actively participated in numerous initiatives and efforts spearheaded by the Arab League. Taking over the presidency, Morocco is expected to guide the council's deliberations and oversee various functions and meetings during its term.

This routine handover showcases the commitment of member states to maintain unity and cooperation among Arab countries, ensuring that every member has an equal opportunity to influence and guide the league's policies and actions.
