CAIRO – 9 March 2023: Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inaugurated and made an inspection tour of some newly-renovated archaeological and heritage sites on Thursday.
He inaugurated the ancient hexagonal intake tower of the Cairo Citadel Aqueduct (Mamluk Aqueduct), which was operating to raise water to the top of the tower and then in channels along the aqueduct and then to the citadel.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in Egypt. It contained a library with valuable books related to Jewish customs and traditions, and their social life in Egypt, in addition to the Geniza (a storage area in a synagogue or Jewish cemetery for worn-out Hebrew-language books and papers, particularly papers bearing the name of God).
Babylon Fortress is also one of the newly-restored sites. It located in the Old Cairo neighborhood. The project included the restoration and development of the southern part of the fortress located below the Hanging Church.
