Who is Egypt’s new Attorney-General?

CAIRO - 25 August 2023: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi appointed Mohamed Shawki Ayad, president of the Alexandria court of appeals, as the prosecutor-general, starting from 19 September, Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

 

Ayad is succeeding incumbent Hamada El-Sawi, who has served in the post since September 2019. He was also a member of the technical office of the Cairo Court of Appeal.

 

He was born on May 9, 1957 in Gharbia Governorate, and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Law in 1979 from Mansoura University.

 

After graduation, Ayad appointed in the Public Prosecution Office on June 1, 1980. On September 28, 1985, he became Deputy Attorney General.

 

He was appointed as a judge in a court of first instance on October 1, 1989, and was promoted until he assumed the post as the court president on September 2, 1993.

 

On August 18, 2020, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree, delegating him to work as an assistant to the Minister of Justice for judicial inspection affairs. He also was also on secondment to the UAE.
