CAIRO – 20 August 2023: Egypt welcomed Sunday the joint statement issued by Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed al-Menfy, Speaker of the Libyan Parliament Aguila Saleh, and General Commander of the Arab Libyan Armed Forces Khalifa Haftar who met Saturday in Benghazi.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' statement valued the three officials' stipulation of the Libyan proprietorship of any political pathway or national dialogue. They also agreed that the House of Representatives would take all the necessary measures to endorse draft elections laws submitted by 6+6 Committee.
Equally, there was congruence on the UNSMIL chief's call on not taking any unilateral steps with regard to the political pathway. In addition, they stressed the salience of Menfy's call for a meeting with Saleh and head of the Council of State to hold inclusive consultations on the drafting of elections laws.
In that framework, Egypt renewed its support to Libyan state institutions on the front of holding presidential and parliamentary elections in tandem in the very near future. The country further called on international parties to back Libyan national efforts, embracing the principle of not imperiling Libya's stability, sovereignty, and ambitions.
