CAIRO – 13 August 2023: Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir witnessed on Sunday a handing over of a new metro train to the National Authority for Tunnels, according to a statement from the ministry.

The new train was locally assembled at the Railway Equipment Factory (SEMAF), which is affiliated to the Arab Organization for Industrialization. The handover comes as part of a deal between the National Authority for Tunnels and the South Korean company of Hyundai Rotem.

As per the deal, the SEMAF will manufacture and supply 32 new air-conditioned metro trains for Line 3 of Cairo Metro. In addition, the SEMAF shall assemble ten metro trains.

On June 12, 2023, the new Ambassador of Korea to Egypt, Kim Yong-hyon, and Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, signed an implementation agreement on Monday to manufacture and provide metro trains for the second and third lines of Cairo Metro.

According to the signed agreement, the Korean government represented by the Economic Development Cooperation Fund will provide US$460 million out of the total project cost of $656 million.

Ambassador Kim, who took over his post as Korean ambassador as of May 31, expressed his happiness to sign this agreement after his arrival to Egypt, and praised the approval as the most prominent example of a push to strengthen the developmental cooperation between the two countries.
