CAIRO – 5 August 2023: A fire that broke out on Saturday in the Cairo headquarters of the Ministry of Religious Endowments (Awqaf Ministry) was caused by an electrical short circuit, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.
The civil protection forces managed to bring the fire in the building in Downtown Cairo under control, the ministry said, adding that no casualties have been reported due to the incident.
Technical examination showed that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in an air-conditioner unit in the first floor of the building.
The fire burnt the room of the air-conditioner and extended to some parts in the first and second floors, the ministry added.
Early in July, Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa announced complete relocation of the ministry's headquarters to the New Administrative Capital (NAC) as per the presidential directives to relocate ministries and public buildings to the new capital.
