CAIRO – 27 July 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi participated on Thursday in a meeting for the African leaders in Russian St. Petersburg to discuss the mediation initiative seeking to settle the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
President Azali Assoumani of the Comoros, the current chair of the African Union, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of the Congo, President Macky Sall of Senegal and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda attended the meeting.
The African leaders followed up during the meeting on the executive position of the initiative after a visit by an African delegation to Russia and Ukraine in June within the initiative to support efforts aiming at reaching a solution to the crisis.
Last month, a delegation including the presidents of South Africa, Senegal, Comoros and Zambia, and representatives of Uganda, the Republic of the Congo and Egypt participated in an African peace mission that visited each of Ukraine and Russia and held talks with their presidents in a bid to help settle the crisis.
