CAIRO- 24 July 2023: Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli headed Egypt’s delegation at the UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+2) that is held on 24-26 July 2023 in Rome, Italy, according to a statement by the Cabinet on Monday.

The Egyptian delegation included Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Sayyed Al Quaseir, Egypt’s ambassador to Rome Bassam Rady, and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Ambassador Ihab Badawi, the statement added.

The session shed the light on proposals and mechanisms for developing food systems in the world, the statement noted.

Egypt is scheduled to deliver its speech at the second session. Egypt will review the efforts it made to promote transformation in food systems, including the formation of the National Committee for Food and Nutrition Systems headed by the prime minister.

The committee aims of establishing a sustainable national system for food systems, and reaching better indicators of food security by the year 2030, the cabinet said.

During by the summit, heads of state and governments will review their commitments they pledged during the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit.

The summit convenes in time when Russia suspended the Black Sea Initiative, per which Ukrainian grains exportations are allowed to pass the Black Sea. The initiative was signed by the conflicting Russia and Ukraine, under the brokerage of Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022.

Russia said that it will not extend  the initiative because the EU sanctions against it has impacted the Russian exports of grains and fertilizers. Meanwhile, the UN has voiced its concerns that the suspension of the deal  would negatively impacts humanitarian aid operations all over the world.
