CAIRO – 16 July 2023: The Public Prosecution announced in a statement Sunday that it had referred a police officer and five civilians to criminal court in the lawsuit known as Sidi Barani case, and that took place in Matrouh governorate on July 11.

The prosecution clarified that it had been informed by Barani Police Department on that date that a man got killed while being stopped by a checkpoint whose mission was foiling attempts of illegal migration and drug trafficking. Later, the department was surrounded by a mob that killed a policeman and vandalized the property.

The Public Prosecution checked the bodies of the two victims, and interrogated four eye witnesses - from the police force - who said that the deceased car driver did not comply with the repeated orders to stop and rushed into the checkpoint, prompting one of the officers to fire at the vehicle.

The prosecution also checked the surveillance cameras in the location where the incident happened, and it turned out that the testaments were correct, and that the driver stopped after he had got shot. Investigators checked the car as well, according to the statement.

Interrogating the suspect officer, he denied the deliberate manslaughter charge, saying that when the car rushed into him, he attempted to fire at the tires but he lost balance. Hence, he missed the target and the bullets hit the driver instead.

As for the mobbing incident, a crowd besieged Barani Police Department with the intent of storming into it. They hurled stones at the building, incurring the injury of four policemen. Eight were arrested, including one that ran over a policeman, causing his death.

Five of the eight arrested were referred to court by the prosecution, which determined the theft and damage of some public properties. One of them confessed that he had killed the policeman, and investigations showed that he was an ex-con. The other three apprehended denied participating in the riots.
