CAIRO – 8 July 2023:  Egypt’s national project of rehabilitating and lining the irrigational canals, which was launched by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, achieved financial revenues equal to its cost within only one year, said Head of the Farmers’ Syndicate Hussein Abdel Rahman Saddam in a statement.

He added that the project helped re-cultivate 300,000 acres that were suffering from water scarcity, noting that the financial cost of lining and rehabilitating the canals in its first phase (along 7,000 kilometers) amounted to about EGP 18 billion [$587 million].

The project achieved profits estimated at EGP 15 billion after cultivating these acres with wheat, he continued.

The canal lining project is part of the National Project for Developing the Egyptian Countryside aimed at raising the quality of life of residents of rural areas. The lining of canals would enhance water management and distribution, ensure the delivery of water to the ends of canals, and inhibit pollution.

It is estimated that the lining project is to save 5 billion cubic meters in seepage losses.
