CAIRO – 7 July 2023: Egypt and China have held the first round of bilateral consultations on issues of human rights in a meeting in Cairo between officials of the two countries’ foreign ministries.

Ambassador Khaled El-Bakly, the Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights and International Social and Humanitarian Issues, headed Egypt's delegation, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Yang Xiaokun, the Special Representative for Human Rights of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed the Chinese delegation.

The two sides stressed that Egyptian-Chinese strategic relations and cooperation are profound at the bilateral and multilateral levels frameworks in light of the growing international interest in human rights issues.

In this regard, they agreed on the need to draft balanced visions that reflect the aspirations of the developing countries for enhancing multilateral international action and reaching targets for which the UN Human Rights Council was established.

This requires building potentials, exchanging expertise and unifying efforts to confront international challenges in areas of common concern, they affirmed.

The two sides stressed the importance of achieving a balance between political, civil, economic, social and cultural rights in light of the need to comprehensively tackle this file.

They highlighted the international documents agreed upon as a reference in formulating relevant international positions.

They also agreed on the importance of holding such dialogues periodically, whether at the level of officials or permanent missions to the United Nations in Geneva and New York, with the aim of reaching joint initiatives that are approved by the UN member states.
