BRUSSELS, June 24 (MENA) - The EU is deeply concerned by the recent escalation of violence in the occupied Palestinian territory, leading to appalling numbers of Palestinian and Israeli victims.
“Recalling the EU’s firm condemnation of the attack by two Palestinians near the settlement of Eli on 20 June, in which four Israelis were killed and more were injured, we equally condemn attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians in the occupied West Bank,” the bloc said in a statement.
These acts of violence have so far led to the killing of at least one Palestinian, injuring many others and widespread destruction of Palestinian property.
In its press release, the EU recalled that Israel has the obligation to ensure the protection of civilians in the occupied territories.
“The EU also condemns Israel’s decision to advance the planning of approximately 1,000 housing units in the settlement of Eli as a response to Tuesday’s attack, following Israel’s decision to advance planning for more than 4,500 settlement units in the occupied West Bank,” the statement read. “We urge Israel not to proceed with these measures.”
“The EU urges all parties to take immediate steps to end the deadly cycle of violence, to stop unilateral actions that fuel tensions, to prevent further loss of life, ensure accountability, bring the perpetrators of crimes to justice, and to engage with efforts to create a peaceful resolution of the conflict.”
