CAIRO – 31 May 2023: The African Union Commission is fully keen to coordinate with Sudan’s neighboring states, especially Egypt, to achieve peace and stop the ongoing war on the Sudanese soil, said Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.
Ambassador Adeoye made the remarks in a meeting with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry on Wednesday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Based on the AU Commission’s keenness to coordinate with Egypt on the Sudanese crisis, Egypt was chosen to be among a small group of countries that will represent Sudan’s neighboring states in the discussions of the African Peace and Security Council on the crisis, Adeoye said.
The group of countries will also follow up on the implementation of the roadmap that was developed to deal with the Sudanese crisis during the next stage, Adeoye added.
Shoukry stressed the seriousness of the current situation in Sudan and Egypt's careful follow-up to the current developments in the neighboring country.
The foreign ministry also highlighted Egypt’s engagement with all concerned partners and the existing mechanisms to work to resolve the Sudanese crisis as soon as possible.
In this regard, the foreign minister stressed the importance of coordination between these mechanisms and the involvement of Sudan in any arrangements or proposals related to the settlement of the crisis.
Egypt has been pushing for a peaceful solution to the Sudanese conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has killed hundreds since it broke out in April.
Egypt has also voiced support to regional efforts to resolve the crisis, including the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan signed by the two rival forces last month.
However, Egypt has warned against foreign interference in the Sudanese crisis, stressing that the crisis is a matter of concern to Sudanese people and that the regional parties should help the brothers in Sudan in resolving the dispute.
