CAIRO – 22 May 2023: The United Nation’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) said it has allocated $5 million for Egypt as part of $22 million earmarked for Sudan’s neighboring countries to meet the needs of refugees.
The allocation seeks to help each of Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt and South Sudan respond to the needs of refugees, returnees, asylum seekers and host communities, the CERF said in a statement.
“As the refugee numbers surpassed 220,000 in a month, UNHCR and partners launched the Sudan Regional Refugee Response Plan, in conjunction with the amended Sudan HRP,” the CERF said.
The conflict that broke out in Sudan on 15 April 2023 caused a large number of civilian casualties, generated internal displacement in Sudan and refugee movements in the region.

The fund has allocated $4 million for the Central African Republic, $5m for Chad (in addition to a previous $3m allocation), $5m for Egypt and $8m for South Sudan.
“Humanitarian actors within Sudan have re-focused their previously allocated $18m UFE envelope in order to respond to the crisis,” the fund added.
Amid the fighting that broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April, Egypt has evacuated thousands of citizens and received tens of thousands of Sudanese people and nationals of other countries.
Egypt has received 98,000 people coming from Sudan out of 120,000 people who fled from the clashes to neighboring countries, according to data by the UN last week.
