CAIRO – 19 May 2023: Syria’s return to the membership of the Arab League is a “beginning for an effective role by the League and the Arab states” to settle the Syrian crisis, said Egypt’s Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmi.
“Syria is once again a member of the Arab League and the League is entitled to exercise its good endeavors and influential and effective role in settling the Syrian crisis,” Fahmi said in a TV interview with CBC Egypt on Thursday ahead of the 32nd Arab League Summit that kicked off today.
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is attending the Arab League summit for the first time since the start of the Syrian war in 2011, which caused the 22-member League to suspend Syria’s membership.
Earlier in May, the Arab League welcomed back the Syrian government after more than a decade of suspension and agreed to form a ministerial contact committee to find a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis.
The contact committee includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and the Arab League’s secretary-general.
Egypt hopes that Syria’s return to the Arab League will push forward the peaceful political path of settling the Syrian crisis, the spokesman said.
He added that Egypt looks forward for the Syrian return encouraging all parties of the Syrian state and other relevant parties to advance the political settlement track based on the UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The Arab countries, including Egypt, back the Syrian people and support their right to restore stability and security, the spokesman said.
He also affirmed the Arab support to the Syrian people in exercising their legitimate right in aspiring to a better future and ending the state of political tension and severe political turmoil that they have suffered from for more than a decade.
