CAIRO – 14 May 2023: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi launched Sunday the wheat harvest season, and inaugurated a potato processing factory at East Owainat in the New Valley.

Chairman of the National Company for Land Reclamation and Agriculture in East Owainat Tawfik Samy stated that the total surface area of land reclaimed by the end of 2022 amounted to 460,000 feddans and that the target for 2023 is reclaiming between 200,000 and 250,000 feddans.

The official added that the total surface area of reclaimed land in Toshki and East Owainat would hit 900,000-950,000 feddans by 2025. He added that 1.5 million palm trees had been cultivated.

A potato storage has been built in East Owainat with a capacity of 160,000 tons, which was essential for investors as the area lacked such logistic service, incurring high transportation costs to store the crop and seeds elsewhere.

President Sisi highlighted that underground water used in reclamation is exploited in accordance with the best international standards to ensure efficiency and avoid loss.

The chief of state noted that investors are welcome to cultivate reclaimed lands with strategic crops needed to fulfill local demand. He underscored that increasing the country’s production of wheat would save the $450 million paid on average every month to import the crop.

The president congratulated Egyptians on successfully reclaiming lands in Wadi Sheih, where the process was quite challenging, and that the achievement has been accomplished by an Egyptian investor who used a new technique to cultivate 10,000 feddans.

Projects in East Owainat earned Egypt two Guinness World Record titles for the largest water intake basin and the largest palm tree farm.
