CAIRO - 29 April 2023: The Agriculture and Irrigation Committee in the Egyptian House of Representatives is preparing, during the coming period, to resolve a number of vital files in the agricultural sector, to support the system and contribute to achieving food security.
The step comes as the agriculture sector receives great attention from the political leadership during the recent period.
There are a number of files and topics that the committee is keen to decide on during the coming period, the most prominent of which are: "activating the role of agricultural associations in the field of agricultural extension and providing agricultural production requirements to support small farmers, in addition to increasing the area of land cultivated with medicinal and aromatic plants in light of the increasing global demand for them to produce safe medicine."
The committee also emphasized that the mechanization of the agricultural sector is one of the most important and prominent files that will be discussed in a session, and the committee had previously recommended an increase in financial allocations to fully support the mechanization of the sector in various fields.
A large share of this mechanization, which greatly contributes to the arrival of subsidies to those who deserve it through the elimination of fictitious holdings.
The committee indicated that achieving self-sufficiency in strategic crops will only be achieved through an elaborate plan in addition to comprehensive data on the areas cultivated with basic crops nationwide, and this will only be achieved through comprehensive mechanization of the sector and soil type, and this is a general trend in the country regarding digital transformation.
“In addition to the agricultural extension file, which is no less important than mechanization, especially since achieving self-sufficiency in agricultural crops, increasing production rates, and working to develop new varieties that are highly productive and disease-resistant and more able to withstand weather fluctuations and climate changes, and what is being done with regard to increasing the area," the committee said.
Agroforestry requires that there be strong agricultural guidance capable of meeting the needs of farmers, especially since there is suffering by some farmers in obtaining information during the different cultivation seasons.
And the committee continued: “The file of medicinal and aromatic plants is also one of the vital files, especially since Egypt has the ingredients that make it qualified to expand the cultivation of these plants, which have a large share in bringing hard currency and directly supporting the national economy.
The committee stressed the need to expand the file of contract crops, because of its great benefit to farmers and the state at the same time, and a serious step towards achieving self-sufficiency in strategic crops.
