CAIRO – 21 April 2023: The Sudanese army agreed on Friday to a 3-day-ceasfire, to enable citizens to celebrate Eid al Fitr.
Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit welcomed an announcement by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces of a ceasefire during the days of Eid Al-Fitr.
Arab League official spokesman Gamal Roshdi said the ceasefire agreement will provide an opportunity to restore calm and allow the civilians to get their basic needs and to open humanitarian corridors to deal with critical humanitarian cases and enable hospitals to operate.
He referred to the humanitarian appeal launched by the Secretary General on April 19 to the two parties to the conflict to cease fire during the holidays.
On Thursday, the Egyptian Ministry of foreign affairs announced the success of the efforts exerted, in cooperation with the Emirati Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to secure the Egyptian forces that were participating in joint military exercises with the Sudanese Army in Merowe.
The Egyptian forces were handed over to the Egyptian Embassy in Khartoum, said the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
Egypt and the UAE expressed their appreciation for the International Red Cross' efforts to ensure the safety of Egyptian soldiers.
“This step comes within the framework of the two countries' support of calm solutions stressed in the continuous communication with the Sudanese parties to ensure restraint, stop escalation, and return to the political track,” said the foreign ministries of Egypt and UAE.
Egypt and the UAE pledged to pursue their attempts to stop the violence in Sudan and protect civilians and civilian facilities, shedding the light on the importance of returning to political dialogue to reach the desired political stability and security in Sudan.
