CAIRO – 19 April 2023: Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, said that the Arab League insists that the only solution for the current conflict is ‘an immediate cease-fire’.
However, He added in televised statements that the League is moving towards ‘everything that helps civilians in Khartoum to catch their breath’, as Khartoum is a large city for the first time witnessing an armed conflict in its streets.
Ambassador Zaki, noted that the League dealt with the Sudanese crisis ‘gradually’, starting by issuing clear statements to the Secretary-General, Ambassador Ahmed Aboul Gheit, calling for an immediate cease-fire and the return of calm.
The following step was to issue another statement by the League Council, and then inviteing the Arab ambassadors in Khartoum to form a communication group headed by Egypt, to facilitate coordination with the General Secretariat, and to form a field vision of what is happening on the ground.
The Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit also discussed on Wednesday over the phone with EU foreign and security affairs official Josep Borrell the latest developments in Sudan.
They underlined the need to exert joint efforts to reach a lasting ceasefire.
Abul Gheit tweeted that he discussed with Borrell the serious humanitarian situation in Sudan resulting from ongoing clashes between the army headed by Gen Abdulfatah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces headed by Mohamed Hamadan Daglo.
They underlined the importance of securing safe corridors to civilians.
