CAIRO – 17 April 2023: Immigration Minister Soha Al-Gendy is following up conditions of Egyptian students in Sudan amid the turmoil currently going on in the neighboring country.

Gendy, in a virtual meeting via video conference with 100 Egyptian students in Sudan, listened to growing concerns especially with exams just around the corner.

She assured them that the Immigration Ministry is acting in coordination with the Foreign Ministry and the Egyptian Embassy in Sudan to guarantee the Egyptian community is safe.

All scenarios and alternatives will be studied so as not to jeopardize the future of the students, Gendy stressed.

So far, no confirmed casualties have been reported among Egyptian students in Sudan, the minister said.

She urged the Egyptian students to stay in their homes until stability is restored.

The Egyptian students are advised to fill out electronic forms that they received to make it easier for the Emigration Ministry to quickly intervene in the case of unfortunate developments, Gendy said.

On Sunday, Egypt called on warring parties in Sudan to agree on a ceasefire and hold dialogue, and on foreign parties to abstain from any actions that would worsen the conflict, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement.

“Egypt expresses its deep regret and sincere condolences for the casualties and injuries among the brothers in Sudan, whether military personnel or civilians, as a result of the ongoing military confrontations,” the statement read.

Clashes erupted in several locations in the center of the Sudanese capital between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary fighters.

The Sudanese army and the RSF are trading accusations regarding who started the clashes. The Sudanese army said its Air Forces are also conducting airstrikes against the RSF.

The RSF has claimed to have seized control of the Republican Palace and Khartoum International Airport. However, the army said that it is still in control of all bases and airports across the capital.
