CAIRO – 15 April 2023: Egypt and Saudi Arabia called for holding an emergency meeting at the level of permanent delegates in the League of Arab States to discuss the ongoing military clashes in Sudan, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid in a statement.

“The successive and dangerous developments in Sudan necessitate holding this meeting for consultation and coordination among the Arab countries to defuse the current crisis, and work to restore stability to Sudan as soon as possible,” said Abu Zeid.

Holing the emergency meeting comes in terms of Paragraph 5b of Article Five of the League Council’s bylaws, which stipulates that the Council can hold, when necessary, an extraordinary session at the request of two member states, Abu Zeid continued.

Clashes erupted today in several locations in the center of the Sudanese capital between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary fighters.

The Sudanese army and the RSF are trading accusations regarding who started the clashes. The Sudanese army said its Air Forces are also conducting airstrikes against the RSF.

The RSF has claimed to have seized control of the Republican Palace and Khartoum International Airport. However, the army said that it is still in control of all bases and airports across the capital.

In a statement cited by the Sudanese news agency SUNA, the General Command of the Sudanese Armed Forces said it is facing attempts by the rebels to control strategic locations in the capital, affirming that such “sinful endeavors” will fail.

The world has called for a quick ceasefire in Khartoum as the conflict escalates.
