CAIRO – 15 April 2023: Egypt hailed on Saturday the prisoner swap between the Yemeni government and the Houthis, which is taking place under the auspices of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The prisoner swap in Yemen is a “positive and important step” on which Egypt looks forward to building on it to renew truce in the country, a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Egypt also called for building on the step to push forward the ongoing efforts to reach a political settlement that leads to comprehensive and sustainable peace in Yemen.
The ministry stressed Egypt’s full support to all efforts that aim at restoring security and stability in Yemen, preserving the country’s unity and territorial integrity, and alleviating the humanitarian crises that the Yemeni people suffer from.

On Friday, the Iran-backed Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition started the release and swap of around 900 detainees, the ICRC said, a step that comes amid peace talks between the two sides of the Yemeni conflict.
The swap also comes a month after Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore their diplomatic relations after severing them for seven years and also said they would reopen their embassies within two months and re-establish trade relations.
