CAIRO - 12 April 2023: Prosecution ordered investigation into the death of Mohamed Moheb, 42, who was mauled by a pit bull a month ago, and as a result was left in a coma. He was announced dead by the hospital this week.
The incident took place in February in Sheikh Zayed City, in Egypt’s Greater Cairo area, as the victim and his son were returning to their home when the dog pounced on Moheb. The unchained dog severed some of the victims nerves and tendons.
Moheb was taken to hospital for an emergency operation. He was reported dead due to cardiac arrest on April 9.
The dog was owned by Egyptian broadcaster Amira Shanab, who was Moheb’s neighbor. Her husband was arrested on charges of manslaughter and negligence.
The Public Prosecution conducted the investigations by asking the victim’s wife, who testified that her husband was transferred on the day of the accident to a hospital, where he was given first aid, after which he was transferred to another public hospital, where he received one dose from the “dog’s venom” vaccination serum, then he was transferred to another hospital to perform the necessary surgeries for him, and he received the second dose of the serum.
The Public Prosecution also asked the emergency doctor at the last hospital, and the orthopedic surgeon consultant who confirmed that the victim was bitten by a dog in his right forearm and elbow. During the anesthesia procedures, the victim’s heart muscle stopped for about thirty minutes, so anesthesiologists gathered to resuscitate him (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), which resulted in the restoration of the heart’s work, so he was transferred to intensive care to monitor his health condition, while he was in a coma.
The Public Prosecution Office received a notification of the death of the victim on the ninth of April, and the Public Prosecution ordered the speedy transfer of the victim’s body to the Forensic Medicine Department to conduct an autopsy on it, indicating the direct cause of death, and to examine the medical and treatment papers of the deceased.
The Public Prosecution will announce, in an official statement, the results of the investigations, and the outcome of its disposal thereof, noting that dog’s owner is still in pretrial detention pending investigations.
