Egypt’s Parliament approves rises in wage, incentives

CAIRO – 19 March 2023: Egypt’s House of Representatives (the lower house of the parliament) approved, on Sunday, the government-drafted law giving a special grant for workers in companies the public sector and the public business sector, and additional incentives for the public servants.

 

The bill reflects the state's keenness to support the citizens against local and global economic crises.

 

The draft law also comes in response to President Sisi’s directives of putting into account the current economic conditions and the increasing inflation.

 

On March 2, 2023, President Sisi announced, while inaugurating projects in Upper Egypt's Menya, a bundle of raises for public employees, pensioners, and beneficiaries of the monetary subsidies programme, and that will be effective starting April 1.

 

President Sisi instructed raising the salaries of public employees with the monthly minimum of the raise being LE1,000. Further, the minimum wage for public employees will be LE3,500, while that of master’s and PhD holders at public institutions will be LE6,000 and LE7,000, respectively.

 

The president also decided to raise the maximum amount of tax-exempted annual income to LE30,000 up from LE24,000. On the other hand, pensions will increase by 15 percent, and monetary subsidies disbursed within Takaful w Karama will go up by 25 percent.
