CAIRO – 17 March 2023: Veteran journalist Khaled El-Balshy has been elected on Friday, head of Egypt’s press syndicate after securing 2450 votes against his opponent Khaled Miri who got 2211.
The supervising committee of the Journalists Syndicate mid-term elections announced the results as following:
The number of total attendances to the elections: 5062The number of Correct votes was 4888, while void votes reached 174
Egypt’s Journalists Syndicate mid-term elections kicked off on Friday to choose new Head for the Syndicate along with other 6 board members.
Up to 51 candidates competed during the elections; 11 candidates ran for the seat of the head, while 40 candidates are competing for the six seats in the council, 12 of them are “over-age” seats, and 28 for the “under-age” seats.
The vote is considered valid by selecting 6 of the candidates whose names are listed on elections forum.
The General Assembly and the Elections Supervisory Committee are chaired by the outgoing President of the Syndicate of Journalists, Diaa Rashwan, who is not competing for the head seat, as he already served for two consecutive terms in the position.
The members’ signature on the lists of the general assembly began from 10 am until 12 noon, until the general assembly was completed and then, the voting began in the elections.
The voting process ended by 8 PM.
