CAIRO – 17 July 2017: Mohamed Farag Amer, head of the Parliamentary Youth and Sports Committee, called on the government to close Al Nakheel Beach in Alexandria on Monday, describing it as “cemetery of [the] youth.”

Amer submitted a request to Parliament asking Prime Minister Sherif Ismail about the deaths that happened at Al Nakheel Beach, stating that this beach annually ends the lives of “dozens of young people.”

He accused the government of neglecting the case, and clarified that three young people died at Al Nakheel Beach Sea during the last few hours.

Amer said that difficult and rough rocks on the beach create dangerous currents and cause drowning.

He also called on the government to assign a group of experts, technicians, engineers and marine scientists to solve the problems of the beach and dispose of the rough rocks.

Earlier, a number of social media users launched a campaign called “Close Al Nakheel Beach,” in which they warned people about the dangers of the beach.

They stated that the sea contains currents, described as “pull currents,” and these currents are a result of deep holes in the sea floor. They also stated that no rescue divers were found at the beach.

Ahmed Hegazy, Head of the Central Department for Tourism and Resorts said in a phone interview to DMC channel that eleven people died in Al Nakheel Beach since the end of April.
