CAIRO – 2 March 2023: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is celebrating Thursday the completion of a number of developmental projects in Upper Egypt's Menya that have been implemented over the past eight years.
Menya stretches on 32,300 kilometers, and is composed of nine cities and 300 villages. The population size is 6.1 million, and the annual increase is 20,4000. The governorate is primarily agricultural so as its most famous crops are cotton, wheat, onion, and sugar cane.
As for manufacturing, the governorate has entered the fields of food processing, textiles, and chemicals. It is noted that Al Matahra Industrial Complex has been recently built as well as another complex for small enterprises taking into consideration environmental specifications.
The Upper Egyptian governorate also has the potential of becoming a tourist destination given the Ancient Egyptian, Coptic, and Islamic archeological sites it has.
In 2021, the number of employed individuals aged above 15 hit 1.6 million, while that of the unemployed aged between 15 and 64 recorded 54,800 (3.3 percent).
With regard to infrastructure introduced/upgraded by between 2014 and December 2022, LE6.1 billion were spent on water supply and wastewater; LE4.7 billion on electricity; and LE12.8 billion on roads. As for human development, LE2.1 billion were spent on higher education facilities and LE6.2 billion were spent on social care services. In addition, LE4.34 billion were spent on the construction of social housing units by 2021.
