CAIRO – 23 February 2023: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry received Thursday a phone call from UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs James Cleverly to confer over the serious developments on Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.
The two ministers discussed ways of reinforcing international and regional efforts to contain the existing tensions between the Palestinians and Israelis. Minister Shokry also briefed his UK counterpart on the Egyptian endeavors to achieve pacification, encourage both parties to resume negotiations, and end the current deadlock in the peace process.
On his side, Cleverly expressed concerns about the deterioration of the security and humanitarian conditions on Palestinian territories, as well as the escalation of violence between the two parties. He also affirmed commitment to working with international and regional partners, including Egypt, in order to contain the situation and revive peace talks.
The phone call tackled the Russia-Ukraine War as there was congruence among the two ministers that the persistence of the crisis would worsen the political, economic, and security repercussions.
The Egyptian minister underscored the negative impact of the crisis on developing countries, particularly in terms of food and energy security as well as sustainable development.
The call concluded by holding talks on bilateral relations so as the ministers shared the desire of bolstering cooperation in the coming period, and organizing a bilateral meeting to further discuss potential cooperation.
