CAIRO – 14 February 2023: Egypt is seeking alternatives to wheat to meet people’s needs without making a significant difference in the quality of food, said Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research on Monday.

His comments were given at the inauguration of the first edition of the National Wheat Day organized by the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT), in cooperation with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

The Minister affirmed Egypt’s keenness to secure wheat demands for its citizens.

In September 202, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali Moselhi denied news reports that Egypt is importing nearly 90% of its wheat needs. The minister pointed out Egypt is importing only about 51% of wheat and the local production is increasing.

In 2022, Egypt's local production of wheat exceeded 2.5 million tons, according to him.
