Egypt’s president orders continued implementation of national plans to enhance renewable energy role

CAIRO – 11 February 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi ordered on Saturday continuing the implementation of national plans related to enhancing the role of renewable energy, the Presidency said in a statement.

This comes in order to diversify energy supply sources, on which industrial, agricultural and urban development relies in Egypt, Sisi stressed.

The president also ordered enhancing and continuing efforts in light of the growing added value of green hydrogen projects.

Sisi made the remarks in a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker.

During the meeting, Shaker reviewed the executive status of a number of projects that are being implemented in the electricity sector, especially those that rely on wind energy and solar power and are being carried out in partnership with foreign expertise.

This comes within the Egypt’s strategy for comprehensive and sustainable renewable energy, based on which the country aims to generate 42 percent of its power from renewables by 2035.

Over the past few years, Egypt has expanded its renewable energy projects, including building new solar parks and wind plants, within the framework of the country’s transition to a green economy.

Renewable energy projects that Egypt has implemented include the Benban solar park in Upper Egypt’s Aswan, which is among the largest in the world.

Benban, completed in 2019, extends over 37 square km to generate 1.5 GW, which is sufficient to provide renewable energy to more than a million homes.
