CAIRO – 6 February 2023: The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) recorded on Monday two new tremors 750 km north of Rafah in northeastern Egypt.

In remarks to state-owned Akhbar El-Youm, head of the Egyptian National Seismic Network at NRIAG Mohamed Abd al-Hay said the tremors took place on 3:30 PM local time with magnitudes of 4.8 and 4.89 and at depths of 13 and 14.5 km.

He affirmed that the tremors were not felt in Egypt and do not constitute any danger, adding that they have not caused any material losses in lives or property.

The aftershocks of today's major earthquake in Turkey and Syria are still continuing in the coming hours, he noted.

Around 3,000 people have been killed and thousands were injured after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks struck Turkey and Syria early on Monday.

Several tremors were then recorded by Egypt and other countries, including Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and Iraq.

Earlier today, Chairman of NRIAG Gad El Qadi said that the area where the earthquake occurred in Turkey on Monday is the intersection of a number of active geological faults.

In statements to MENA, Qadi said the epicenter of the earthquake is located near the intersection of "East Anatolian fault" with the Dead Sea Fault Zone.

He further noted an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 on Richter scale was registered about 691 kilometers north of Rafah and at a depth of 18,30 kilometers.

The tremor occurred at 3:17 a.m., Cairo time, he added.

Egypt has sincere condolences to Turkey and Syria over the victims. The Egyptian government also decided to send urgent relief aid to each of the two countries in the face of the repercussions of the crisis.
