CAIRO – 3 February 2023: The dwellers of Hurghada city in Egypt’s Red Sea governorate felt tremors at around 1:40 AM on Friday as a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck north of the city and lasted for few seconds.
Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) said the quake took place 37 kilometers northeast of Hurghada at a depth of 8 km.
NRIAG, however, affirmed that there has been no damage or losses in lives reported after the earthquake.
Chairman of NRIAG Gad El-Qady said up to two earthquakes are recorded daily either in the East Mediterranean or in the north of Red Sea.
He affirmed that Egypt is not located on the earthquake belt.
Last week, NRIAG reported a 6-magnitude quake in the eastern Mediterranean on the Greek island of Rhodes, 502 km from the Egyptian coast.
The quake took place at a depth of 54 kilometers and was felt by a number of citizens within Greater Cairo but no losses or injuries took place.
