CAIRO – 27 December 2022: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has issued directives for upgrading ports in an integrated manner to increase their capacity; in a way that enhances their ability to support the trade turnover, export and import.
This can also consolidate Egypt's geographical location as a regional and global logistical hub, Sisi added, asserting that the transport network is considered a “supporting infrastructure” for all state sectors.
The president made the remarks during his meeting on Tuesday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Minister of Transport Kamel el Wazir and Presidential Adviser for Urban Planning Amir Sayed Ahmed.
The meeting touched on efforts to develop the ports system nationwide, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.
The transport minister reviewed endeavors to upgrade various ports across the country via building breakwaters, dredging and deepening shipping lanes, in addition to establishing new berths that shall be suitable for giant ships.
Wazir also briefed President Sisi on ongoing efforts to develop the “grand Alexandria port” that is set to contain the ports of Alexandria, Dekheila and Al Max.
The meeting also discussed work progress as regards upgrading the ports of East Port Said, Damietta and Ain Sokhna.
Sisi was also informed about the status of work at the first line of the high-speed train network that is due to link the city of Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea and the cities of Alexandria, Alamein and Matrouh on the Mediterranean with a total length of 675 kilometers.
