CAIRO - 8 December 2022: Egypt’s House of Representatives (the lower house of the parliament) is considering new government-drafted amendments to the Labor Law raising the pension age from 60 to 65.

The parliamentary committee for manpower met on Wednesday with representatives of the Egyptian Trade Union Federation.

Amendments to the labor law aim to come in line with the 2019 Pension Act that aims at raising the age of retirement to 65 by the year 2040, as this age will gradually be raised starting 2032.

At the meeting with the parliamentary committee, Head of the National Organization for the Social Insurance Gamal Awad objected to including the term “old age” in the new amendments instead of “the age of 60,” Youm7 reported.

Also, the Egyptian Labor Law regulates the work of foreigners, and sets the conditions that allow them practice their work inside Egypt, in private sector establishments, public sector units, the public business sector, public and local administrative bodies, and the state’s administrative apparatus.

The law, in the chapter regarding "regulating the work of foreigners," explains every subordinate work or any profession or trade, including domestic service workers.

According to the Labor Law, the employment of foreigners in all private sector establishments, public sector units, public business sector, local public and administrative bodies, and the state’s administrative apparatus is subject to the provisions contained in this chapter, and to the condition of reciprocity.

The law stipulates that foreigners may not engage in work except after obtaining a license to do so from the competent ministry and that they are authorized to enter the country and reside with the intention of work.
