CAIRO – 28 November 2022: Turkey and Egypt may restore full diplomatic relations and mutually reappoint ambassadors in the coming months, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday.
Cavusoglu told reporters that Ankara and Cairo may resume diplomatic consultations led by deputy foreign ministers as part of the normalization process "soon."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that restoring relations with Egypt will begin with a ministerial meeting between both countries.
In an interview in Turkey, Erdogan said that he had spoken with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for from 30 to 45 minutes on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
He added that Turkish relations with Syria could improve as his country’s relation was restored with Egypt.
On November 21, 2022, President Sisi shook hands with Erdoğan in Doha, as both leaders emphasized the depth of historical ties that bind the two countries and agreed to develop bilateral relations, spokesperson Bassam Rady said.
Fulfilling the invitation of Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al Thani, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi headed to Doha to attend the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in the evening.
President Sisi has been to Doha in September, paying the Gulf state his first visit since he assumed office in 2014, so as he and the Qatari Emir attended the signing ceremony of three MoUs.
